A manifesto for your consideration:
We are forming a band.
Our lack of musical ability is not a liability, it is an asset. Which is not to say we will not endeavor to master our musical instruments, just that we will not let the mere lack of skill deter us from getting on with getting on and making music.
The way we figure, the guitar, or piano, or flute or whatever, they exist. We can manipulate these instruments to some degree already to produce some kind of sound. What is left to us to find in these first days is to create those sounds our meager skills allow in such combinations as to construct some kind of songs. As we learn more about our instruments, these sounds and our skills should no doubt improve, but in the meantime, it is our hope that our enthusiasm and dedication to fun will not only carry us through initial musical frustrations but also produce a music all our own.
Because some someone sometime invented these instruments and devised how to play them; musical styles were developed by people like ourselves. We will develop a style that suits us. A style that accomodates having little to no musical ability whatsoever.
There are no rules. There is only fun.
The band will be fun. Whatever rewards or failures we are to experience, we will view the band as a success so long as we are having fun.
These are some concepts I had in mind when I first started thinking about doing this for real. Discuss them, and everything else (including any ideas at all about moving forward), in the comments below.
This shall be our headquarters. Discuss that too, if you want.
